Dr Janette Deacon is based in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and has a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Cape Town. She has been involved in archaeological research on the Later Stone Age and rock art in Southern Africa since the early 1960s and has authored about 140 professional articles and 9 books. She was Archaeologist and Acting Head of the Professional Division at the National Monuments Council from 1989 and until her retirement in 1999 and is currently the Honorary Secretary of the South African Archaeological Society. As co-ordinator of the South African Rock Art Project (SARAP) since 1998, she has organised a series of workshops and courses on rock art management and conservation for staff members at world heritage sites and national parks in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania.
